Fired by love's urgent longings, I am his rocketman.

Alleluia Community

The Alleluia Community is a Christian Community.  We believe that we have been called by God to be his people.  Members of the Community come from all walks of life, and from diverse economic, sociological and educational backgrounds.  We are an ecumenical community representing eleven different Christian denominations.  We believe that Jesus really does want us to be one as he and the Father are one and we take Jesus at his word when he said, they will know you are my disciples by your love for one another.  (John 13:35)

For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, ‘I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  Therefore, come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then  I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. (2 Cor. 6:16-18)

The Community began officially in 1974, when the original members (13 at that time) committed to build a Christian Community.  They began to look for property where they could live together in close proximity, in order to support each other in following Jesus — where God could live in and among them.  Eventually, they found property located in Augusta, Georgia.  The founding members of the Community literally sold their homes and pooled their resources to buy property, containing 18 duplexes, built around a grove of pecan trees, and situated in a poor, run down area of south Augusta.  This property is now affectionately referred to as “Faith Village”.  Can you imagine?

Many of the early members were men and women who experienced a personal encounter with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, along with tens of thousands of others, who had similar experiences in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.  After undergoing deep and radical conversions, they felt the need to do something extraordinary with their lives.  Forming Christian Community seemed like the natural response to the supernatural outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.  And suddenly  a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed  and resting on each one of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance … And fear came upon every soul; and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.  And all who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need … And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.  (Acts 2:2-4, 43-45, 47)

Over the years, the Lord has added to our numbers.  People have come from all over the United States and from places in Canada to be part of the work that God is doing in the Alleluia Community.  During the forty years we have been in existence, we have learned so much about what it means to be a people set apart to live and proclaim his marvelous deeds.  We continue to seek the Lord for wisdom to live for his glory, for power to grow in love and for discernment as we give our lives to him in service to the coming of his kingdom.

Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things which he  possessed was his own, but they had everything in common.  And with great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.  (Acts 4:32-33)

It is impossible to describe the Alleluia Community in a page or in a number of pages.  Rather than try to do so, I expect to publish posts, every month or so, about the Community.   Sometimes I will write about our life together, but more often than not, I will invite others to share their experiences of life in Alleluia.  I am very excited about it and I hope you will get a lot of enjoyment out of this section of my blog.
