Fired by love's urgent longings, I am his rocketman.
Made In Secret

Made In Secret

“Hey sweet baby, I’ve waited my whole life to be your mama.” Those were Anna Kate’s first words to Emmett.  These simple words capture perfectly what AK believes in the very core of her being.  This is not an abstract thought,  nor is it a cleverly concocted myth to make life seem better than it really is.  In fact, it’s the truth — the real truth.  AK really has been preparing her whole life to be Emmett’s mama.

Similarly, AK’s first utterance to her “sweet baby” profoundly touches a theological truth about all of us.

         For you formed my inward parts,
         You knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
         I praise you, for I am wondrously made.
         Wonderful are your works!
         You know me right well;
         my frame was not hidden from you,
         when I was being made in secret,
         intricately wrought in the depths of the earth.
         Your eyes beheld my unformed substance;
         in your book were written, every one of them,
         the days that were formed for me,
         when as yet there were none of them.
         How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
         How vast is the sum of them!  (Psalm 139:13-17)

Shea trying to hide her beauty

AK understands this passage very well.  She believes that she is wondrously made (though not the same way her sister Shea believes it — but her time will come), that she is thoroughly seen, inside and out, by God, that he knows her perfectly and that he has laid out all of her days — everyone one of them — because he loves her more than she loves Emmett.

Even so, AK would be the first to admit that she did not arrive at this wonderful place without, shall we say, excruciatingly difficult labor pains.  Once upon a time, AK was not nearly as wise as she is now.  Chances are that you weren’t either.  Life is full of missteps, mistakes, poor choices and sorrowful consequences.  But oh what happy faults!  Faults that cause us pain, that show our weakness, that demonstrate our need for love, but, most importantly, reveal the boundless heart of our loving Father who runs to meet us and restore our place in his great home.

AK knows she has a Father with an immense longing for her good, who loves her beyond comprehension, who orders her days, who numbers the hair on her head and on little Emmett’s head.  She understands that no matter what comes, whether it appears good or bad, her Daddy has good plans for her.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

The same is true for you and me.  We may look at the circumstances of our lives, and think, surely God can do better than this.  Maybe he can — maybe we should?  Whatever our current circumstances, we have a Father who loves us tenderly and longs to show us, each of us how much he loves us.  Where ever you find yourself, begin today to push open the door to your heart and ask God to come in and reveal to you how much he loves you.  He is just waiting for you to ask …

  1. I loved this post Dad! You are always full of insight, but I especially love reading about Emmett! It is so comforting to me knowing that Emmett’s life is already known and that he is “wondrously made”! Love you!

  2. That’s pretty amazing isn’t it. I am doing some research on Thomas More and I was thinking about his birthday (born in 1477) and about how God knew everything about him before he was even born — same is true for all of us
